6 ways to make your shoes last longer

To ensure the durability of your leather shoes it’s important to keep in mind a few aspects. In this article we’re sharing with you how to take the best care of your Melvin & Hamilton shoes in order to enjoy them as long as possible.

01 Keep them clean

It goes without saying that regular shoe care is essential. Depending on the frequency of the use, you should clean them every 2 to 3 weeks. 10 minutes is enough to keep your shoes like new! Remember that the shoes need to be dry to proceed with cleaning. Here you will find our shoe care tutorial.

02 Don’t try to outsmart the weather

If it’s supposed to rain or snow, wear the appropriate footwear. If your shoes do unexpectedly get wet, leave them to dry in room temperature with shoe trees inside them. If you have no shoe trees make sure to buy a pair and for the moment, use newspaper instead. Avoid putting your shoes near a radiator or heat source.

03 Keep a rotation

We know it’s your favourite pair, but it is recommended that you do not wear the same shoes for many days in a row. Wet leather loses its form and so it needs time to rest.

04 Gently put them on and off

Even though it might seem unimportant, the way you put your shoes on and take them off can negatively influence their state. In case of lace-up shoes you should remember to loosen the lacing enough. Protect the behind part of your shoes by using a shoe horn whenever you put on your shoes. Never force your feet in or out of the shoe as it may cause irreparable damage.

05 Store them properly

Insert shoe trees immediately after taking off your shoes. Cedar wood helps to absorb any bad smells and moisture. They also help to stretch the leather to avoid wrinkles. When not wearing for a long time, place the shoes in dust bags before storing them away. Make sure the storage space is free of humidity.

06 Keep your soles intact

The soles are the most exposed to damage, that is why you need to pay attention to them. Sole protectors to apply by yourself or by the cobbler can considerably prolong the life of your shoes, but also will make them less slippery. Remember that leather soles do not support rain. You should act as soon as you notice any damage. Repairing your shoes rather than replacing them is more economical and eco-friendly.
